Can people generate enough electricity for their lives by their own effort?

Get a bunch of gym gear, or maybe just one exercise bike, and adapt it by hooking it up to a little generator lighting some bulbs. You will need tools and you'll need to do the maths first. A cheap exercise bike, of the sort that uses a friction belt to provide resistance, might be best - you just take the belt off and then find a way to hook up the generator

I reckon the alternator from a car is your generator. That plus some car headlight bulbs and some wire will do it - visit a scrappie.

See how long people can keep the bulbs lit up for. Choose the number of bulbs so that you can keep the bulbs lit for a few minutes max after which you should be completely exhausted - that will be enough of a challenge for your guinea pigs. You might find one headlight bulb is enough of a challenge on its own.

The conclusion: humanity depends on external energy sources; we can't survive without them. We're stuffed if we can't find an alternative to oil. That's a big conclusion these days.
