Aren't they arbitrary in every culture? I'm genuinely curious. When I was younger, I browsed a book called "Miss Manners" that I received as a gift, but I just didn't (and still don't) understand why the rules of etiquette are so important. Personally, it doesn't bother me whether or not people have good manners or not; it's the kind of person they are that's important (at least it is to me). What is your opinion? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Communication is probably the single most important issue in the world -- always (past, present, or future). If you are rude, you either fail to communicate or you fail to get the results you want, most of the time. It is not entirely subjective. If someone punches you in the stomach just to see how much you hurt and then asks you for a favour, you won't do the favour. But, if he/she asks you nicely, you may. Some people don't know when they are being rude and are therefore forgiven, at times. But rudeness is never something to aspire to.

LOL, well IMO, there is not very much emphasis on good manners anymore, at least not in public.

Being "not rude" or having good manners go hand in hand with civility.

Whether a person has good manners or not is an indication of the type person they are.
