It depends on what service you go through. When I adopted from the local humane society, it took maybe a week tops, but when I adopted from a breed specific rescue, it took much longer. Be prepared to answer questions about pet history, your living situation, income, and maybe even have an in home visit.

Adopting a dog does not take long at all once you know what dog you want. When i adopted my dog last year all i had to do was tell the poeple that worked there that i wanted the dog and then i just had to sign a couple of papers and that was it...it took only about 20 minutes.

It depends. I have 3 dogs. 2 of them were from an animal shelter. When I did it through an animal shelter, I went there, saw the dog I liked, filled out some paperwork and went home. The whole process probably took about an hour. My other dog was a stray. We brought him to the pound (to make sure he didnt have an owner looking for him). The pound held him for a week, and then we adopted him. It really depends on where you adopt the dog, because differrent shelters have different rules for adopting animals. Many of them also want to check your background information to make sure that you are a good owner, and dont neglect your current animals. Good luck adopting!

I recently adopted a dog through our local Humane Society. It took about a week or so. We went in to spend time with him a couple of times. We filled out an application and they reviewed it. They had to check in on our previous pet's veterinary records. One of my cats had not been re vaccinated for Rabies, so we had to take of that first. They also came out to our house to see what the dog's living conditions would be. They were very thorough. As soon as we finally got approved for adoption, we picked him up the next day. I wish you the best of luck in finding a animal companion. Thank you also for considering adopting. So many animals out there need a good, caring family and a place to call home.

It depends on the rules of the adoption facility. They may need to confirm that you can have a dog where you live, they may want to contact your vet to make sure you are capable of having a dog. They may not have finished checking your references or talking with your vet. Each adoption facility follows a different criteria for adoptions.
The adoption facility where I was a volunteer quickly processed applications, so the dog could go to his or her 'forever home' and become aquainted with his/her new family.
Good luck. Woof!

If you adopt from the humane society or shelter many times you can walk in and look at dogs and walk out owning one that day.
With rescue groups t may take a week or two. They do background checks and vet references and most do a home visit also.

Depends on the place. The dog I have now was adopted from the pound. We walked out with him the same day we found him. (Of course, we spent quite a while playing with him and getting to know him to make sure he was the right dog for us.)
