Ok, here is a complex, and very complete, answer to your question but also one that will hopefully help to instill a sense of "thinking outside the box" that will help you as you trek through life.

Most people will read into the question and automatically look for someone who led people through a troubling time (Giuliani, former N.Y. Mayor) and/or situation for a good cause. However, this question lends itself to being though about from many different perspectives. Maybe your teacher did this on purpose or maybe it was by pure chance. Regardless, it is an opportunity for you to display cognitive thought that reaches beyond the basic level of most people who will read the question.

Here are a few thought that will hopefully provoke a sense of stepping out from ordinary thought:

(1) Is there a requirement as to the number of people who were present when the person performed demonstrated their leadership role? An example of someone acting with leadership qualities in the presence of no-one but themselves is Aron Ralston. He utilized his personal experience and fortitude to get out of a situation whereby he was stuck with his arm wedged in by a boulder for almost a week. Ultimately he had to cut his arm off with a "Gerber" type multi-tool in order to save his own life. While there was a string of bad decisions/assumptions that led him into his predicament, he utilized leadership abilities in order to save his own life.

(2) Does the leadership have to lead to a successful or beneficial result? Based on the way the question reads, you could also discuss someone who displayed BAD leadership that led to failure. There are numerous stock market examples of CEO's who destroyed their companies. You could also find numerous political examples but that would be more of a daring choice because you don't know the political leanings of the evaluator of your essay.

(3) Does the result of the person's leadership have to be for the greater good? There are plenty of people who demonstrated incredible leadership for very bad causes. Some examples are Adolf Hitler, David Koresh, or Charles Manson.

Don’t lose sight of the fact that all leaders exhibit both good and bad leadership at various times so your essay could talk about a leader's good AND bad qualities. The result of seeing beyond the face of a question like this can be that you impress your teacher. Later on in your life you will impress your boss, or maybe some investors that you are seeking financing from, by showing them an innovative and/or unexpected perspective on a given topic. If this is a competition you should try to make to make yourself stand out by picking something out of “the norm”. Never be afraid to take risks or to take the other side of a popularly held belief.

Good luck with your essay and in your life.

If you think about these people you will quickly conclude that leaders do not expect a free ride.

If you think about the student council, you will see this is a an organization for budding leaders.

If you think about the assignment you will recognize that is is being given to see what you, as a potential member, think about leadership.

Now it has come time to think of the most important question in this matter - why, after showing so little initiative, do you believe you are suitable material for your student council?

Franklin Delanor Roosevelt was a great president because he helped us with our economy. He helped us get jobs and he helped us get out of the great depression. He did lie to us to make us afraid of Russia. He died of lung cancer. He helped us get jobs, get freedom, and he was one of the best presidents. You can look some more on www.wikipedia.com. I just learned about him in American History. You could probably talk about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
