I got my Toshiba Satellite at Best Buy for a little over $300. I have regretted it everyday for seven months. I had so many hardware problems with it. Thank goodness I bought a warranty on it. The warranty entitled me to a free computer after three failed repairs. So I got a free computer but paid the price difference to get a Gateway. The moral of this story is... make sure you make your decision on the brand and not the price. I personally am a huge fan of Gateways, probably because I have experienced problems with Toshibas, Compacs and HPs.

To answer your question about a reasonable price:

The notebook I just bought at Best Buy for $700 was on sale for $400 at Gateway.com. It is now $549 which is still a cheaper price than I paid. I love it, it is small but it is excellent if you often use the battery. Here is the link:

The only thing I don't like about the above computer is the new Vista OS. If you have not tried Vista, I HIGHLY recommend that you use friend or coworkers computer that had Vista to see if you like it. I hate Vista and am going to buy XP to install on it. It is hard to find a computer that still has XP.

Here is another sale that Gateway is only $549 but the SALE ENDS MONDAY.

I hope this helps! I hope you find a computer that you like!

Acer are a good make i've had my Acer just over 2 years (before i bought it i used to think they were a crap brand) it's an excellent allround laptop only ever had one problem with the hard drive but the shop i bought it from were more than happy to replace it with a hard drive twice the size don't let that put you off their a good build quality and if you happen to accidently knock it on to the floor it won't break and the computer will stillwork perfectly after more than 2 years the battery still gives a good 1h30-2hours of battery life

before that i had a Compaq and often had to re-start after logging as the start bar didn't respond and if you left the laptop in a period of hibernation for more than 2 days when you switched on the laptop it wouldn't awake from hibernation and had to re-start it's self

Aldi in the UK are selling a medion with vista and a 15" screen for under £400. As to whether they have any left or it's a reasonable machine, no idea.

If you want a reasonable performance instead of leading edge laptop, look at end-of-range shops... sellign last years models, ex demo and that sort of stuff. Morgan Computers in the UK is good for that - Toshiba for reasonable prices. They'll probably mail order to the US as well... but I'm sure there must be equivalent outlets in the US.

"lots" of video modifying is not any guffawing count number number so that you ought to heavily evaluate getting a mac to attempt this kinds of stuff. you are able to get a good older era macbook pros for a touch over $a million,000USD. In a mac, it truly does no longer count number number in case you flow with their "very last year's" version because they rather a lot layout and engineer their laptops to be prior to the curve so that you'll nonetheless have a reliable 5-6 years on an before version apple. wish this enables.
