I'm uncertain whether or not i'm going to know for sure if my water breaks...we've been having sex to soften/ripen the cervix and i don't want to spring a leak and then have sex not knowing......could something serious happen if that was to happen??? 3 days over due date. 3 cm dilated and 70% thinned for 3 weeks now. lost mucous plug and had bloody show about 2 weeks ago. Am i risking it???

when your water breaks, its not always like on the movies. it may be a trickle or a gush. if it is a trickle, you will always feel wet. mostly when you lay down and stand up you will feel it coming out. amniotic fluid will build up in your vagina and when you stand up it will all come out. if you have to keep a pad on at all times, you might have a leak. the only way to tell is if you go to the hospital and they use the nitrazine paper which will turn blue if it is indeed amniotic fluid. remember that the fluid will be clear, not sticky and have no smell to it. i wouldnt have sex while you are dilated because the semen can get into your uterus and irritate it or even cause an infection. sex is okay when you are trying to soften and ripen your cervix, but after that it may be risky. i wouldn't keep having sex if you are already dialated, that isn't safe for the baby, i don't think. however, you'll know if your water breaks. it isn't like on TV and in the movies where it all comes out in this big gush. it's more of a slow leak, almost like you're peeing in your pants a little bit at a time and no matter how hard you try to hold it in, you can't. it also has a very distinct, almost sweet smell to it. when my water broke, i thought i was just wetting my pants but i put a pad on just to be sure and i soaked thru 2 pads in about an hour. then 43 hours later...my son was born!! relax, you'll know it when it happens. you won't be able to control it and make sure you eat something before you go to the hospital...they won't feed you and you're prolly gonna be there a while.

have you told you doctor that you lost your mucus plug and did your doctor say it was safe to keep having sex? if you are 3 cm are are probably close to going in to labor some women's water does not break mine didn't they had to break mine but when your water breaks it is not always like a huge gush like you see on the movies it can be a small continuous trickle but you will know when it does break i would say contact your health care provider and ask them they can give you a better answer than anyone on here can good luck!!

You'll notice it. Some women get a gush of fluid but others (like me) get a gradually leaking of fluid. It looks like you've wet yourself. You'll know. But I think you should lay off the sex until you go into labor.. esp. since you lost your mucus plug and had bloody show. You don't want to risk infecting the baby or you. Better to be safe then sorry.

You will feel no pain, no sign of needing to pee, nothing! Just quick and complete wetness all under. Then you better get where you are going pretty fast! No worries about the sex at this point in the game. It's too late to miscarry. Have fun!

you will defenitly know when your water brakes its like when you fill a glass up with water and time it over and it all gushes out well yea thats what its like and you feel like you peed on your self i had a baby 9 months ago and i was worried about the same thing if i would know when my water broke o and trust me i knew if your water brakes dont have sex because it can spred infection easier from what my docter told me i had the same questions and usally as soon as your water brakes you will get serious contractions that will gradually get harder and more painful

omg you'll know. I thought just a little fluid ran out and that was it. I was like a damn geyser. I was in labor for 23 hours. and they had to keep changing the pads i was sitting on because there was so much coming out.

Believe me, if you and hubby are in bed, having sex, and your water breaks, YOU BOTH WILL KNOW.
