Not now. I personally belong to socialist party usa and understand several third party concepts. The reason no third party will candidate will rise is because they will get shot. George Wallace (who was probably the best pure politician of the 20th century) was shot and Perot was threatened and forced to drop out. The royal class in america (and there is one) will not accept a three way split.

They don't have a chance right now - but I keep voting for them - hoping that things will change.
Actually - the last election - I didn't vote Green or Independent or anything - because I thought it was REALLY important to get Bush out of office - so I voted for the democrat.
BUT - almost every other year that I have voted - I have voted for somebody other than a democrat or republican - mostly because I agree more with their thinking.
If people (like you, and many others) keep voting for the democrats and republicans because they think they are the only ones who have a chance at winning - and they want to be with "the winners" - we will never really have more than two choices.
Vote your heart!! That's what I say! (and last year my heart told me we had to get Bush out of office. unfortunately - it didn't happen - and now a lot more people are dead. sigh)

Not under the current all-or-nothing implementation of the Electoral college.
A third-party candidate can get over 50% of the total popular vote, but if they don't get over 50% in enough states to get the electoral votes for those state, then it's the same as if they got zero votes.
That's why I usually don't vote in presidential elections. Since I don't vote for either of the primary two-party candidates, under the electoral college system, my vote is literally never even counted.

Never. People prefer the two-party system even though they are not always happy with the candidates.

It would be nice, but never happened in my lifetime.
The last time that happened was 1850....Millard Fillmore of the Whig party. I believe it was a pretty strong party then also. In those days there were 4; Democratic, Republican, Federalist & Whig.

No they really do not have a chance. We need a strong third party. We need the option of a viable third choice. The republicans and the democrats need to know and fear that we have that viable choice. I hope that I get to see it come about in my lifetime.

I don't see that happening in my lifetime. The 2 major parties have too big a head start in terms of organization, money & name recognition.

I think you are going to see them gaining more each year as people become more disaffected with the 2 parties sharing power now.
