I think they are trying to desensitize their children to violence and death in hopes that they will be more able to cope with the trauma of some future mass world war. Once the children are numb to the emotional effects of experiencing death first-hand, they won't have to worry about the monumental counseling bills that would pile up due to post-traumatic stress disorder or something.

Or they are just bad parents. Whichever.

I saw it last night, and only saw one kid in the whole theater. But I'd guess, because they wanted to see it and couldn't get a baby sitter. But I agree, the movie is definatly rated R for a reason.
