It was the Zimmerman telegram, in which Germany proposed to Mexico that Germany would resume unrestricted submarine warfare while Mexico invaded the Southern USA. When the USA sued for peace, the terms would include the return of large portions of the southern USA to Mexico.

The British intercepted and decrypted the telegram, but its authenticity was doubted in the USA for most of March 1917, until the German foreign minister Zimmerman inexplicably announced from Berlin "Yes, it is true". Public opinion in the USA against the war reversed almost overnight, and Congress declared war early in April.

It was NOT the sinking of the Lusitania, nearly 2 years earlier, nor was it unrestricted German submarine warfare.

There were numerous factors but the most accepted one was that Germany started sinking all vessels sailing to England.

That included ships from neutral nations.
The torpedoing of the Lusitania was the flash-point so to speak. Although it was a passenger liner there is little doubt the Americans were sending military equipment to the UK, which at the time was denied.

The US was under a huge amount of pressure from both sides.

There was a strong German lobby group in the US wanting neutrality, but the general population saw the need for intervention purely on humanitarian grounds.

The UK and France was also pressuring the US.

The US entered into World War One in response to Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare. The Germans started sinking anything that was heading to England, be it enemy or neutral. The last straw was the sinking of the passenger liner the "Lusitania".

Well, Germany started it.... Mostly. A Serbian -I think it was a Serb- assassin killed the Arch Duke Austria (Franz Ferdinand) so that officially started the war.
The US entered because they were pissed that Germany kept sinking British passenger ships that had at least 128 Americans on it, warned them not to do it again, Germany did, so they entered the war.

Because Germany kept pushing the limits of our neutrality in an attempt to cut off supplies to Britain and France, sinking ships that Germany claimed were carrying supplies and we said were purely passenger ships.

Would it not be easier to just go to Wikpedia and copy the info down yourself? Or do you want to know what some on this site know for themselves? I do not think this site was developed to show how adept you are to clicking on Wikpedia and regurgitating electronically what you see.

Great Britain nagged them into it... and the sinking of the Lusitania was a good excuse.
