my guinea pig had lice too and i'm a little frustrated at you cause it doesn't matter if you CAN see a vet, because you HAVE TO SEE A VET! there's not some magical soap that will wash them away, and leaving them alone could really hurt your guinea pig! go to the vet AS SOON AS YOU READ THIS! and dog shampoo is way too harsh for a guinea pigs skin if you try that you'll seriously hurt your guinea pig. if you have to wash him/her, use rabbit shampoo! ugh you have to research before you get a pet or else you'll end up killing it within the first week, especially guinea pigs, they're so fragile!

errr errr errr stop, put the brakes on. No you cant get Guinea Pig Lice. The kind that Guinea pigs and rodents get are Species specific. They will not live on you, they do not prefer your chemistry. Your body produces chemicals that rodent lice can not tolerate. Therefore they will only jump onto you but wont live on you. Vise versa human head lice wont live in Guinea pig hair.
The most common is Gliricola porcelli, gyropus ovalis, trimenopon hispidium. These are all species specific and wont infest humans, Your guinea pig can get one or all three of these types at the same time. generally almost every pet store sold, wholesale bred, and most pet guinea pigs have lice, you just cant see them. They dont seem to be a problem untill your pigs immune system was lowered, for some reason, say a cold or stress. All of a sudden the lice population explodes and you can see them then. They can be transported in Litter and bedding, hay, toys, other pigs, or even on green grass and vegtables that are able to be around other outdoor wild rodents. You need just to bath them in a Pyrithrin based shampoo, I Prefer Adams Flea, lice, and tick FOR CATS, or Rodents. Careful what kind of shampoo you use, has to be formulated for animals that clean themselves. Bath them every week for up to 3 weeks. Then once ever 2 weeks for a month, then once a month. There cages should be cleaned, and washed with weak water & bleach solution. All bowls, toys, wooden hideouts, anything in the cage also needs to be cleaned with a weakened bleach solution. Anything not able to be cleaned needs to be thrown out, including bedding and hay thats not used. Start fresh. This will get rid of of stray lice and cause a re-infestation. 95% of all rescue pigs I get in my rescue have lice. They never infected me. I have raised Guinea pigs professionally and rescued for 17+ years.

The answer is no. The lice don't even want to live on you just like if you had lice they would not like to live on your guinea pig. Even if they jumped off of your pet and landed on you they would either a) realize you weren't a GP and jump back off or b) stay and starve to death. So don't worry about that. What you should do though is take your GP to a vet that knows about small animals and get him a insecticidal shampoo. Lice aren't very pleasent to have and although minor cases aren't that irritating is could get worse and soon your poor GP will be itching and scratching all the time. This could lead to sores and infections for your poor pet so get him fixed up as soon as possible. Good luck =)

No, the lice that live on guinea pigs do not like to live on humans. However, they may bite you just to see if you are guinea pig or not, but they won't stick around long.

Lice are species specific, so no your guinea pig lice will not affect you. You should however see your vet, as I'm sure your piggy is miserable with all those biting little bugs!!

No, you cannot get lice from your guinea pig. It is species specific. You can treat him with either Advantage or topical Ivermectin. Be sure to clean all areas surrounding the pig. Take him to an exotics vet to be properly treated, if you don't know what you're doing, the medicine can kill.
"Avoid flea and tick powders and shampoos -- many contain pesticides that are dangerous for cavies"
