Beading only gets expensive when you want to use crystals and the "one of a kind" glass beads. I do most of my beading with glass beads, it is a lot less expensive and looks just as nice. I shop at Hobby Lobby and Michael's for all my beading material. I only buy a few items like my mixed oval and round beads at Michael's. If your Wal-Mart still has a craft section you can get some of your supplies there also.
Get a tool set that has needle nose pliers, round pliers, flat pliers, crimping pliers, and wire cutters about $10-$20
A bead board $5-$10 Sounds expensive but it helps to lay out your project and measure while you are designing it
Wire- I use 7 strand coated wire from Hobby Lobby $3 It is flexible but strong enough for a solid glass necklace, including a large pendant
Findings- crimp beads, clasps, jump rings all sold in packages of about 10-100 for $1 a package (Hobby Lobby)
Finally your beads ranging anywhere from $3 a package to $10 a package.

It's not that expensive to start beading. Beads vary in price but nice looking plastic ones are inexpensive. You need a few tools like needle nose pliers and wire cutters, you also need either memory wire or other stringing materials.
You can buy the tools inexpensively at craft stores. You might even find them at garage sales.

Check all your local bead stores first, prices vary...sometimes alot. Your right about it being expensive too. I've been doing this for 15 years and there isn't alot of money to be made. If your doing things for yourself or just a hobby you will love it. Try these sites for supplies (it depends on what you want to make) and continue to check those prices! iBead.com, House of beads.com Contact me if you need some tips or advice (poodlemam1965@yahoo.com)

I like the Fire Mountain catalog, but you could start with a kit and then you will have the basics.
