I would like to hear from any ford mechanics who have ever changed the timing belt on the Zetec E 1.8 engine of the ford focus. Could you tell me what sort of condition the idler guide pulleys were in. I had my timing belt changed on that engine at a ford garage, but I am concerned because they only renewed the belt and tensioner and when I asked Vospers what is in the timing belt kit, they said just the belt and tensioner. It is a 1999 T 64000 miles, when will I need to change the pulley?

It is not often that the pulleys need changing , but the garage would have change them if they had needed changing .
don't worry .

For that engine the timing belt kit can include just the belt and the tensioner or the belt, tensioner, and 2 idler pulleys. Here is a photo of the timing belt larger kit: http://info.rockauto.com/Gates/Detail.html?NBH2522941.jpg

With just 64000 miles it is very reasonable to not replace the idler pulleys. The idler pulleys should easily last until the next belt change (around 120000 miles). They might even last beyond 150000 miles.

You are smart to take timing belt maintenance seriously since this is an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks with the engine running then the engine is damaged.

Very unlikely you'll need to change the pulley for a long time, they don't wear at all rapidly. Be assured that if there was the slightest doubt the garage would have done it, they'd have welcomed the extra work (and income) if they could have justified it!

I would`nt worry. If you had the belt replaced at a Ford garage Im sure they would have done everything that was needed. Why not ask the garage where you had it fixed and ask them for a report
