It almost HAD to be invented. Progress required it. Something was needed to transport people faster and easier than horses. Steam power was never practical for cars and batteries of the time were not very good alternatives since efficient chargers were not available and not every town even had electricity or running water. A German named Diesel with help from his friend Mr. Benz made the first internal combustion engine, not Henry Ford.
