Because its in a bowl!!! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GOLDFISH BOWL!! GF need 10 gallons a piece, filter, heater, and airstone. They are most likely trying to kill themselves to end the misery. You're right - luckily its still alive. Either take all that stuff back to Petco and demand every penny back or go buy a suitable home for the poor thing. You should not have been sold goldfish for a bowl period.

you opt to understand what this is? this is an obtrusive sign that the fish is suffering. once you positioned a goldfish in a bowl you difficulty them to suffocation and that they might desire to desperately gasp for air on the exterior. yet another severe difficulty is the shortcoming of filtration which means the fish will additionally be stricken by ammonia poisoning. Assuming you purchased someone-friendly goldfish they actually require a minimum of fifty 5 gallons as adults, and ideally a minimum of 20 gallons as juveniles. A filtration equipment is a might desire to for wholesome goldfish as they produce lots waste. Do genuine and return the fish. in case you opt to maintain fish do it properly by technique of studying the fish, determining to purchase the mandatory kit, and then the fish.

To start with goldfish should not be kept in bowls. Betta do good in bowls because they live in puddles in the wild and have what is called labyrinth organ which allows them to breath air.
Goldfish require at lest 3 gallons of water for every inch in length. This is becuase if the amount of waste they produce. On that note they should have filter on their tank to remove the excess waste. It doesn't hurt to over filter either. The water can't be too clean right.
When you do water changes don't change more than 50% of the water or you will remove too much of the beneficial bacteria from the environment.
As for your question, your fish may feel confined or just testing his boundaries. putting a cover on your tank will help. If your fish is in a bowl securing netting around the top is best, as this will not inhibit air exchange. If you have an aquarium, make sure you have minimal openings.

My Betta does the same thing. I was told by the fish store that they get startled easily by sounds shadows or just about anything...and put a lid/cover on it because it will probably always do that...bowls are fine for bettas and i think goldfish, are OK..??, just get something to cover the top not seal it...they get their oxygen from the top of the water so they do need ventilation but keep the bowl and get a cover, I have a square cover on a round bowl for my Betta so as to let the air circulate.. thats what the fish store said.....smile (good luck)

How big is the bowl, sometimes it's due to lack of space. If he's got a good sized bowl for his breed, then it could just be that he just likes to jump. A lot of fish do it and it's not just yours. Just get a wire grate or something to let air in and out but will keep him in. Or if you really wany to spend the money you could get another tank with a lid, but a screen like I mentioned would work fine. Hope this helps!!!!

Certain varieties of goldfish (like shubunkin and comets) like to jump...
incidently- goldfish need large well filtered and aerated aquariums... these fish have been kept as treasured and beloved pets for centuries and if baffles me why after all this time, there are still people that think you can put them in a bowl. They can live for 30+ years and can get a foot in length... they are really such a lovely fish. Most people never see that though, because the fish die as babies from improper care...
If someone said "I had a human that lived for 3 years in a closet and all I fed it was twinkies and it never got over 20 lbs"... would you then say "oh, clearly humans do fine in closets and only grow to the size of the walk-in" same deal with the fish...

think there might be something wrong with you tank, is it new? If it is,
you might have anmonia in the tank. There might be something wrong with the water. Did you let the water sat for at least 21 day before adding the water? Also, your fish might be scared. If you just got your goldfish, they gets scared when yout near the tank. Try leave you fishie in peace for a few days.

Sometimes fish are jumpers. It's that simple. That's why we're supposed to put covers on our aquariums. That said, however, fish also jump because they are trying to escape toxic water that is killing them. The first reason you may have toxic water is because fish, especially goldfish, should not be kept in bowls. Bowls do not provide adequate space for the proper dissipation of ammonia, which is created by their waste. And goldfish, because of their internal organ structure, which is different than other fish, produce even higher levels of waste than other fish. For this reason, goldfish must be kept in a minimum of a 10 gallon tank. Once they reach 3-4 inches in length, their minimum gallon requirements go up to 20 gallons per fish. And this water requirement grows as the goldfish grows. Also, your goldfish may be jumping out of the water because it is suffocating because it can't get enough oxygen. All fish, but especially goldfish, need a lot of oxygen in their water. Filtration provides oxygen in the water by constantly circulating the water. Also, filtration helps get rid of all of the toxic waste that creates bad water quality. You need to learn about the nitrogen cycle so that you will be able to understand what bad water quality is and how you can remedy that and give your goldfish good, healthy water in which to live. You need to learn how to do proper water changes and how to properly clean the tank. You need to learn how to test the water so that you will know when you have good water. The more we know about how to keep a healthy environment for our fish, the happier they will be. Good luck!

I have no good answer. But it kinda reminded me of Finding Nemo where the fish try to escape the tank.
And I had a fish in a glass bowl. Maybe that's why he died so fast. I didn't flush him for like, a week. He got all slimy and his eyeballs turned white. It was really gross.
I suggest a tank.

He doesn't like the water. Have you got a pump in the water? They need oxygen how big is the tank. One goldfish needs about 10 gallons. Do not put chlorinated water in the bowl or tank - you can get some de-chlorinator at the pet shop or garden supply places. Home Depot or Wal-Mart have it.
They need their water oxygenated and pure.
