We answer because as humans some are always out to prove their superiority over others and if they can answer a question that no-one else present can answer, they feel more superior. Others answer because if we can assist a fellow human being (and politicians don't count) then it makes us feel good for helping that person by sharing information.

Funny. You seem to have asked this to yourself. As long as we are all different, I guess each one has one reason. Maybe we think we are so witty, or so wise, or so lonely... Maybe a sum of all these. Specially the ones, like me, who don't want to be bothered and hide behind Yahoo. So I can really answer with all my sincerity about controversial matters.
