I was cleaning up my yard this morning, cutting down all the dead stuff I'd left up for winter interest and I noticed a number of my plants have new growth starting at the bases. Obviously, we aren't out of the woods yet weather-wise (I live in Chicago), so should I cover that new growth up with mulch or uncover it and let it get some sun?

Thanks!

Leave a inch or 2 of mulch still over it. If it's growing under the mulch, it's alright, and I doubt winter is over just yet!

I live in zone 5 and never mulch anything! Mulch breeds fungus. My stuff is growing well. The growth you are seeing is normal for the plants, who live in zone 5, to have at this time. My crocuses have been up for 5 weeks, and the temps have been 10-15. They're fine. No mulch!

Yup, til Memorial Day. If you have time, you can just watch the weather forecast and only go out to cover them when it's about to be cold.
