I am an animator (2-D), and was attracted by your question. I guess there are two different ways to solve this matter: you must be filming horizontally, but vertically, with the aid of a glass to hold the flying object would be one solution. The second would be to film the flying object against a blue or green background then superimposing the image over the desired one. But, if the flying object has to relate with the non-flying objects, then all I can imagine is using what you fear: wires!

I assume you're doing a 3-D, real-objects animation? Can you rig up a boom and suspend the object with fishing line?
