Well, the problem is my stepdad is a pain in the ***... I have had Xbox Live since 2004...This bastard doesnt know it...But he doesnt want me to have it because he says he will spend too much money if I do...Which is false because he never paid squat for it...or else I would know, but unless he comes in my room he cant see the internet connection to my Xbox 360... The problem is he has a new laptop, which apparently can detect my xbox 360 connected to the internet...He told me that when his internet was wired ...now he bought a wireless router (or modem, I cant tell the difference, its a linksys with two antennas...)

So from his wireless laptop can he detect my wired internet to my xbox 360?

If so, how can I change that?

He can certainly see your connection just by logging into the router and see what IP addresses are connected to the router. Can he specifically tell its an XBOX?? No, he will only beable to see the IP address, unless your xbox sends its name when it connects to the router like a computer would display its name like "Roberts Desktop" if it is setup with a name.

Assuming that your Internet connection all runs through one unit (DSL/Cable/whatever router), then yes, anyone with access to that unit could detect it if they knew what they were looking for. (For instance, if your router assigns addressed through DHCP, then anyone who could log into your router could see that an address had been assigned for X many unites, and if he only knows of X-1 units (that one being your X-box), then he can assume that there's something else out there.

Of course, this assumes he knows where to look. If you can assign a static IP address to your X-box on your network, that's one small thing you can do to limit your exposure, but the fact remains that traffic will still be going through the same equipment he has access to, the router, in order to get to the outside world. If he is savvy enough, there's nothing you could do to completely hide it. Of course, if he's not found it in 2-3 years, he doesn't sound all that computer/network savvy, now, does he?

Bottom line, so long as the X-box isn't doing anything wirelessly (make sure it's disabled if it's an option, or else you might have an extra connection to that router you didn't realize!), the only extra risk you have now is if he pokes through the menus on the new router, trying to be cool with it. If he doesn't know what he's looking at, however, probably not a huge reason for concern.

Couple of issues ought to reason this. a million) The router could have locked up - relatively the lights are on, yet no person is at residing house. Reboot the router and it may replace into responsive. 2) The router is secured and additionally you're giving it the incorrect password. i comprehend of countless routers that, in case you attempt to hook up with the incorrect password, will enable you to connect, yet not settle for any site visitors. In different words, you will tutor as related, yet once you run a standing (or ipconfig), you're starting to be to be a 169 handle (the microsoft default) as a replace of a valid IP handle.
