This question reminds me of the episode of FRASIER when the whole gang went to a Halloween fundraiser at the library dressed as different literary characters. They were dressed as:
Frasier and Daphne: characters from THE CANTERBURY TALES (I forget which)
Niles: Cyrano De Bergerac
Martin: Sherlock Holmes
Roz: O... from THE STORY OF O (Oh.....)
Bulldog: Waldo... from WHERE'S WALDO?
Gil Chesterton: Chingachgook from THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (another mystery solved)
Okay, enough of my tangent....

Think with films and tv adaptions characters from the Bronte sisters books maight be the way to go. E.g. Cathrine from Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre. However it depends on the party. Not sure Catherine would be the most cheerful person at a party.

Hi, my kids had this at school last week, my eldest went as Thing 1 from Cat in the Hat, her friends were Thing 2 and the cat. My youngest went as Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Carribean. I wanted my youngest to go as the Hungry Caterpillar but she insisted on being Jack! You and your daughter should sit together with a pile of her books and just go through them and think what looks the best and is easier to make.

Alice in Wonderland, easy and a classic and you'd could even buy a Cheshire cat from the Disney store to go with her!
You could go as the white rabbit or the queen of hearts.
Hope you both have a wicked time, I love dressing up!

The story is about a girl named Meg who meets Mrs.Whatsit, and her two counter parts. The book gives descriptions of how they dress. You should be able to find the book at a school library or public library.
Bettie
I have the book at school so Monday I can bring it home and give you more information.

Well, don't do harry potter as everyone will
You could be Scout and she could dress up as a tree with a hole and presents in it, like Mockingbird!
You could dress up as dirty, crazy boys and be Lord Of The Flies.
You could dress as something from the Bible.
How about Depp and Bloom, since Pirates of the C started as a book?!!
