When it goes into safemode I have to unplug it for several hours before I can get the hard drive to work again. If not, the hard drive light blinks yellow instead of green and will not come back on by just moving the mouse or hitting any key.

Did you try pushing the power button, sometime that works.

Otherwise look in Control Panel for Power Options and then set it to never turn off.

First of all, it shouldn't be so hard to bring back a system from failsafe mode. Try pushing the power button to bring it back. I had a problem with the powersafe on an IBM T-23 so I had to push and hold the power button for about 5 seconds to shut off the power, then push the power button again to bring it back on.

Now as to minimize the powersafe mode disruptions-- there's usually a program to manage power that comes from the manufacture of your laptop. The program's name is usually something along the line of power management. You can set the length of time before entering powersafe or sleep mode. If there's no option for "never," then select the longest time/delay as possible.

Right Click on your desktop and select Properties.

Go to the "Screen saver" tab and at the bottom, click the Power Settings

Make sure that all of the elements on the page are set to ...Never.

Then, go to the tab that says "Hibernate" and click the box OFF where it indicates to set the computer in hibernation mode.

I am not an expert but I think you seriously need to consider two options.
one, go through your programs and documents and delete everything you don't need, then update your anti-virus and thoroughly scan what's left, then de-fragment your hard drive.
two, take your 'puter to the shop and have your power supply, your hard drive and your RAM tested and/or replaced.
yellow flashing lights usually aren't good.

Does it work when you change the settings in control planel > display settings > screensaver? They're normally in there. "Go to standby after X minutes".
