Hi,

I've bought a total of about 3. But that was many years ago. I still have two in my wardrobe and wear one of them still. The other is a 3/4 brown suede. Still very nice.
You need to check the style and make sure it's not dated. You don't want to be wearing an 80's style around!
Also the better quality leather jackets have long panels of leather rather that multiple panels sewn together.

So don't worry about it. Just make sure that you get a style that you like or one that suits you and is a classic, so it's style won't date.

And don't forget to haggle for a decent price. Don't be afraid to ask the price, try it on, and still walk away to price other jackets. They will invariably drop their original asking price. And you can always offer your own price.
