I think it was a real shame how noone thought to put a tape into Apollo to record the famous images that were beamed back live, from the moon. If only one of the thousand scientists had thought of that.

The mission was taped, only trouble is they lost the tapes. These tapes were recorded at the tracking stations direct from the receiving dish. It would have been interesting to view the better quality tapes. We will have to make do with the poor quality recordings of the mission taken after conversion to TV.

Do you mean a tape to leave on the Moon?

If what you mean is a tape to bring back as a back up, then it could have been subject to mishandling just as other tapes were. All we had to do is create more copies of the "original" tapes.

This time around, they would probably be DVD's or MP3-type recording.

With the kinds of tapes in use at that time, the size and weight of the tape, along with the cumbersome machine needed to run it, would have cost as lot in terms of other payload. At best, it would have been a U-Matic 3/4 inch by Sony (only available in USA in 1971).

Don't forget that at the time, people were still impressed by "audio" tape recorders that were actually portable! Wow. You could record sounds with a device you could carry in your hands.

Since our technology has advanced so much since 1969, I am sure that we will have more images and better feed on the next moon mission.
