What is the main determining factor for you to give a thumbs down to an answer, particularly when the answerer uses references and facts to back up his/her answer? I've noticed that many answers give irrefutable facts to support it yet there's always SOMEONE who gives a thumbs down to it. WHY!!?? Are people really that stubborn and disagreeable to the obvious?

Some people will give a thumbs-down to anything that they disagree with, no matter if it's someone else's personal opinion or a 40 page thesis complete with footnotes and references. They apparently can't entertain the idea that someone else's ideas can be both valid and yet different from theirs.

When I give a thumbs-down, it's because the reply is crude or rude, or else the logic is so skewed as to be absurd. I often give a thumbs-up to someone whose views I may not agree with but who has done an excellent job of supporting his statements with facts and references.

Many irrefutable truths are not irrefutable, and so I use the thumbs down to remind that person of their ill preparation in answering the question. When an answer is little but proselytizing for a religion....I give a thumbs down.

I know why Christians give thumbs down to many answers, but that is another question. . . I will hint though-- "padded box."

I give thums down when the answer is racist or mean (I read a 14 years old girl asking if the fact that she didnt have a boyfriend was because she was ugly and this person said :Of course you are, I bet you are fat and disgusting). I also give thumbs down when people insult other participants and when they answer "+2" or "I dont know".

Could be badly argued or presented, unreadable, ranting, an obvious copy/paste.

Especially in this section there is no such thing as "irrefutable facts". Indeed, that is the basis of most discussions.

I think some people do it just to be annoying. I give thumbs down when someone leaves a hateful comment.

Typically, I only give a thumbs down to answers such as "thanks for the 2 points".

I think some do it just to make their own answer seem more appealing.

I only do it if it's really insulting. You can disagree with someone without resorting to "playground" name-calling.
