Roberto Carlos is a rubbish defender and not a good midfielder or winger. This was his big problem, he would play in one position but thinks he should be playing somewhere else.
I am a huge Brasil fan but I found him to be a liability when playing for us: he hogs all the free kicks and 99% he blasts into the wall or over the bar, this is crap you need to play the percentages and get the shot on target and make the goalkeeper work. Let someone else take the free kicks, how many times do you have to waste it before you realise you are crap?

As a defender he was irresponsible and would go raiding down the left wing, leaving huge gaps behind him so when the move breaks down the opposition were running into huge empty spaces that he should have been defending.

He is also responsible for the demise of players like Denilson, I would have loved to see him on the left wing but Carlos kept getting in his way. If we had a proper defender we would have won the World Cup in 1998 and probably 2006 as well, again a mistake by him lead to Frances goal.

Roberto Carlos is past his prime at this point in his career. There was a point when he was the best left-back in the world, but he has since been surpassed in that role by a number of players. Sadly, players in his position have a chance to play a bit longer but it is harder to stay competitive at the top level, and as Real Madrid is in contention every year for honors both domestically and abroad, he just can't continue to excel at that level. He is a great defender and his marauding runs certainly helped to re-define the position, but it's time for him to step down graciously and move on.

Carlos definitely can't run the way he used to. Henry left him far behind when he scored the goal in the world cup. He realizes he's getting old, so I think he'l try to go out on a high note like Zidane. He can stil walk into most of the clubs in the world, but probably not in another 2 years.
Also I think he has too much respect for himself to join Beckham, so he'll probably retire straight off.

Its about time he left. Real Madrid need new blood. He still has a great shot but his positional sense is getting worse and he is more prone to errors than ever before (look at Roy Makaay's goal for Bayern in the Champions League). I think he should go to a less demanding and competitive league...MLS perhaps :)

hes an experienced player but doesnt have all the effort and energy as he used to have. he'll probly retire in a few years which means he might go to a smaller european team (fenerbache gave an offer for him last year) or will end up going back to brazil before retiring (like ze roberto did last year)
