Don't use toothpaste--too abrasive for gold!! Something with ammonia works best. Next time you're at the grocery store, get yourself some jewelry cleaner (in the same isle with laundry detergent, etc.). It's only about $4 and works best. Soak your ring for a few minutes or overnight (won't harm diamonds), then brush thoroughly with brush provided or an old toothbrush (not too stiff bristles because gold is soft and can scratch) and rinse. You can do this every night (I have for years) and your diamonds will always look spectacular!

Barbara is right...toothpaste is an abrasive, that's how it cleans your teeth. It can damage your gold.
If you can take it to a jewelry store, that would be your best bet. You can have the gold buffed to remove small scratches and restore it to like-new condition.
If not, try warm water and mild soap or ammonia. We use ammonia in our ultrasonic cleaner. Windex would work about the same, I suppose. If you are using ammonia, just use a tiny bit in a cup of water. Scrub your diamond with a soft bristle toothbrush and be sure to scrub under the stone since that's where goo builds up and makes the stone look dull.
Good luck!

You can take it to a jewerly store although sometimes they charge. They also have a jewlery cleaner that you can buy set the ring in it and it cleans it theres a brush in it too to scrub the stone. You can also steam it clean. And although I have never tried it I have heard that a toothbrush with toothpaste works well to.

I used to soak my ring in a shot glass of vodka. Some people say it's a waste of perfectly good alcohol but it worked well for my rings!
