by instruments, i mean instruments... you know things you play, like flute, drums, etc. and background i mean history..

Pretty much all the non-electronic instruments = all the instruments in an orchestra. No electric guitars, electric organs/synthesizers/pianos, etc. Background and purpose - well, swing was popular then which was kind of jazzier version of dixieland, and becomes one of the influences of rock-and-roll. The other main influence on what would become rock-and-roll was the blues. Bluegrass was getting started just before WWII, which is a big influence on country & western.
