I just think a local online bartering system would be a great idea, especially in my county, we are the poorest in the state of OR. Do you have any suggestions or ideas or how would I get it started ? I'm used to organizing things etc, I'm a recently retired school teacher, so we organize a lot. thanks WEndy

I'm not sure where you are from Wendy, but have you checked out CraigsList.com? This is a great website for just about everything in most major cities. You can advertise for free in many different categories.

wendy, Sorry but there is already something like this out there. there is craigslist.org (Barter section) and freecycle.org, but then there is actually a third site specific to bartering. Of course, I cannot remember the name of that site, but I know it it exists because my local paper mentioned it in an article. In any event, you could start your own board devoted to local posts; even if it does overlap with other sites, I think it would be a good idea.

Also, if your county has many poor people who may not have access to the internet at home, what about a Barter Board (message board with barter and free offers) at the local community center, school, or library? It's low tech but might reach some of the poorest people in your county (i.e., those without home internet access).

Good luck!

Not that your notion is new or unique but it's a great post and thought.

I live in Central Florida, near Orlando, and there is a "directory" here for just such a purpose. In my particular case and in growing up, I'd be happy to share my services for something I need that someone else needs.

Your issue however pretty much insists that LOCAL is a keyword, although I've traveled all over the USA to trade labor for even no more than a place to stay, in a different place.

I have a suggestion, and I support this org, and defend their efforts. Hook up with Habitat for Humanity, and I have to believe they can direct you to situations that may help you, as you help others. Beyond that you might start networking with any area of society that needs teachers?

Any skills or knowledge you have should and can be shared and you can determine the level of return that you assume is fair.

Have you checked out the freecycle website? It was started to keep things from being thrown in the trash with the objective to keep the landfills from getting so full.
The main web address is: www.freecycle.com, but if you add your city/town name it will give you a local site, for example ours here in Richmond VA is: www.richmondfreecycle.com, so you would do: www.(yourtown)freecycle.com
