It doesn't really matter because without Bill Cower, I don't think the Steelers will be as good...but....
we have to give Mike Tomlin a fair chance before we say the Steelers will not win.

I also believe they could have afforded Joey Porter but the Rooney's are notorious for not spending alot of money...

Although he made some disruptions on the field, he was a great, high impact player on the Steelers, and a leader on the D. He is like what Ray Lewis is to Baltimore. It was a bad decision, and the Steel City will regret it this season.

Porter did contribute more talent to the Super Bowl than a lot of other Steelers...and I have to say that his series of sacks on peyton manning in the playoffs made life so much more worthwhile. However, he didn't fit the Steeler model player. The Rooneys have always been noted for running a high quality franchise and Porter's mouth has always made for a somewhat uncomfortable contrast. I have to admit, coming from a girl with a way too competitive attitude and a passion for trash talking, I always enjoyed hearing that stuff and seeing The Kick that came after every sack.

As a Steelers' fan, I'm not sure what to think. Sure, he's a good player. He wrecked Peyton a few times in the playoff game in '05. Right at the end of the game too, it was beautiful. A part of me would like to see him stay because of things like this.

On the other hand, don't think that he fits into the mold of what the Rooney's like in a player personality-wise. He's loud and brash and sort of a gangsta. I don't like to root for guys like that.

I don't think that his leaving the team will be as much of an impact as people think. I think Big Ben's play this year will determine how well they do. But next season will be anybodys guess due to all of the changes going on.

well it pisses me off being a steelers fan. but it started with the hiring of mike tomlin bc they shouldve hired someone on the inside. also tomlin's strategy clashes with the player's talent. also porter can still be productive for another 2-3 years so this doesn't make much sense.

What makes you think the Rooneys have a lot of money to spend? Anyway though a lot of players helped them get to big games and they let the players go. Heck you could have said that about Randle El. It doesn't matter. I think Porter wanted out though if he couldn't get a new contract. He wasn't getting one. They figure that 8 years is good enough as far as career. He is likely to taper off. I also think with Cowher leaving that his relationship with Porter made Porter want out as well.
Hey u.r. maybe YOU need to watch more ESPN. THEY CUT HIM. He had a year left and they said goodbye in a salary cap move.

Kim, I love it! Only because I'm a Dolphins fan!
I hate today's NFL, I think they should do away with the salary cap so teams can keep their players.
He still has a lot to give to the game and it's a sham that Pittsburgh could no longer afford him.
But I'm more than happy to have him in Miami.
He brings a big motor mouth and energy that the Dolphins badly need in order to compete in the East.

Been a Steelers fan for 60 years Tomlin needs to resign.
Put him on SSI .

I quit until we get a smart coach going forward. However he smiles nice but look at the score board occasionally.

Tomlin needs to go Let Big Ben make the decisions .

Ok the Refs helped the Steelers win the Super Bowl....Just playing...but Porter became overrated and I think that the Steelers were interested in making room and picking up Lance Briggs from the Bears before he was hit with the franchise tag.

Porter has been declining and I think it was a good move to let him go. If you don't think back to another 29 linebacker the Steelers resigned to a big 5 year contract..........Jason Gildon.

If you think Porter, at this point is worth $5 million for one season, you are unfamiliar with the realities of football.
Mark my words, Porter will have a unspectacular end to his career in sunny Miami.
NO, they could not afford to. Both Polamalu and Big Ben are coming up for contracts in 2008. They need the money for their future, not hanging on to their past.
I loved Peezy, but this is how it goes.
