Perhaps not necessarily better than King's work but stronger in graphic detail texted with utmost caution so as not to lose the reader would be Clive Barker.

King's older work is undoubtedly his best. He was strongest when he wrote Carrie, The Shining, and 'Salem's Lot. Of late, many of his novels seem to have that flat effect of books churned out just for profit and because it's expected of him.
I think Neil Gaiman is stepping forward in the category of dark fantasy/borderline horror. He is innovative and original in thought process, and his writing style is both unique and gripping. Neverwhere is quickly becoming a modern classic. New writers like Charlie Huston (author of Already Dead) are stepping forward to breathe new life into the tired vampire/horror genre. Plus, I think everyone needs to keep an eye out on Sergei Lukyanenko, the Russian author responsible for the acclaimed book Nightwatch. His prose is rich and his horror stories somewhat allegorical to the current political situation in Moscow. Very heavy stuff.

while King is excellent, his older works are much better.
Clive Barker, Bentley Little, and Dean Koontz are three more truly gifted horror writers.
Jim Butcher, while not "horror" is also a gifted story teller.

I think it depends on what you like about Stephen King. I think Dean Koontz is better. And, Clive Barker is much better. And, there's a whole new sub-genre that crosses over into sci-fi, mystery & romance with authors like Laurell Hamilton, John Steakley.
