This is an embarrassing question for me to ask. I see my husband every 8 weeks as he's in the US Military. I've just got back from seeing him. We we made love we noticed a fishy odour and I've noticed a little discharge. A yeast infection springs to mind but I do not have any irritations or burning. I did read that this could also happen if I've not been sexually active for some time, which I haven't. It's quite embarrassing as I've never had this happen before. I will see my gp on Monday hopefully

I would say it is more likely to be a case of bacterial vaginosis, although yeast infection is also not something to rule out whether you have all the symptoms or not.

Bacterial vaginosis is normally the infection most commonly associated with that fish-like smell, the smell is the result of 'bad' bacteria taking over from 'good' bacteria, and normally this is down to a change in vaginal pH. If you are not used to having sex all the time then BV is an increased likelihood as the difference in pH between semen and the vagina, or lubrication and vagina, can interfere with overall vaginal pH that is responsible for keeping a healthy balance between the vaginal flora.

Bacterial vaginosis can be awkward to treat because it is not just a case of treating the infection but also reintroducing a healthy balance within the vagina – as a note most doctors will prescribe antibiotics, however you may want to consider discussing this with your doctor because antibiotics can cause yeast infections leaving you with infections for longer.

I would recommend looking at home treatments such as tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide or gentian violet – be careful you know what you are doing beforehand – or at least look at upping your intake of Lactobacillus acidophilus during the time you have this infection just to give your vagina a helping hand. Basically eat live pro-biotic yogurt, also put some plain pro-biotic yogurt into your vagina before bed, washing out in the morning, for this I find making yogurt ice cubes works great at reducing the fuss of insertion.

A fishy odor is not a yeast infection. See the doc as this an infection just not a yeast infection. Also I would go see the doc and get this treated now as left untreated some infections can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which can land you in the hospital.

A fishy ordor is not normal nor a sign of a yest infection. It sounds like bacterial vaginosis, which does need to be seen by a doctor and treated with antibiotics.

Things that cause bacterial vaginosis are anything that can disrupt your bodies natural PH balance. Sex, semen, new soaps, lotins, medications, etc..

See your doctor as soon as possible. The smell will only get worse and the infection could also.

The fishy odour is the give - away - it may be gardnerella, which is sometimes sexually transmitted, sometimes not; sometimes you just get it.

You and your hubby will probably need to be treated as a couple with antibiotics if it is. Go to your GP and ask for a swab test to be done to confirm it.

oh front bums and the littel problems they throw at us! I believe it's quite common, I got something similar when I started having sex with condoms alot(not just the condom, there was a man attached!). The good thing is, vaginas are self cleaning, so stay outta the bath, keep synthetic fibres away from it(coton pants and no tight trousers) and don't put soap near it, and it will probably be ok in a few days or so.

yeast infections dont cause fishy smells, it is probably bacterial vaginitis, very common infection especially after a period of abstinence, you will need some antibiotics, try not to be embarrased though as it is as common as a yeast infection
