I may be starting to play bass guitar in a band soon, and I just want to know what is the etiquette for playing? Do I have to just stand and walk around a bit, or is it acceptable to headbang, thrash around, and totally let rip?
(I'm talking about gigs only here. If recording I would just stand still)

The thing is I want to conform to tradition, and yet provide loads of energy in my performance...

Thanks in advance!

I play blues and R&R and never move around, mainly because at most gigs there isn't room.!!
If the spirit moves you then go with it, there is no tradition.Just because Jet Harris danced around, Bill Wyman didn't.

The vast majority in the audience are fans and want to see the showman vs. the virtuoso. There will be fans who are musicians and are more interested in your technical abilities.

I find that more are there to feed off the energy and in return lend their energy to inspire the band as well.

There have been many times I've gotten a bigger reaction from the audience after having played a simple riff, while getting almost no reaction on more difficult technical sections.

My boyfriend is the bass player and vocalist in a band (www.myspace.com/tennason) and, while he can't do too much headbanging while he's singing, he puts a lot of energy into gigs. He lifts bass over his head, moves around a lot etc. Do what ever feels good to u! Good luck x
