Focus on the basics: water, food, resources for industry, transportation and trade opportunity.
1.Discuss climate, in the context of food: large areas are suitable for agriculture and ranching. Large areas had or have forests for lumber too. And offshore good fishing.
2. Discuss water sources--plenty of fresh water in some areas--which is critical for population growth and agriculture.
3. Discuss mineral resources(iron[for steel for railroads, cars etc], gold [the 49ers], etc) and energy (coal/oil/gas/geothermal/other) resources. How were mineral resources important to the settlement of the west and to the development of industry? How have energy resources been important and remain important.
4. Discuss transportation--as previous answerer said. Having two coasts is a big deal for commerce because lots of material travels through ports; having big rivers and lakes spurred early travel and settlements.

Hey sunshine,

The natural features have helped shaped America in many ways. The rich soil in Minnesota attracted settlers to America and started the cities of the North. People have settled by water for many reasons. They live by water to drink, to get power from, to help logging and for transportation. Almost every city on the water was started because of at least one of the above reasons. People came to America for logging jobs in the big woods of Minnesota (where im from, if you hadn't guessed already). Some of the Natural beauties in America have made cities huge because of tourists.

Thats all i can think of of the top of my head, sorry. Hope I helped =)
