first subtract 5 from both sides.
1/2x +5 -5 = 12 - 5
1/2x = 7
now multiply both sides by 2
1/2x * 2 = 7 * 2
(1/2 times 2 becomes 1)
and now....
x=14

try plugging it in. half of 14 is seven, and seven plus 5 equals 12!

1/2x + 5 = 12

2(1/2x) + 2(5) = 2(12)

x + 10 + 24

x + 10 - 10 = 24 - 10

x = 14

Insert the x value into the equation

- - - - - - - -

Check

1/2(14) + 5 = 12

14/2 + 5 = 12

7 + 5 = 12

12 = 12
