President Bush has promised to veto a resolution by Congress to set a time limit on deployment of American troops in Iraq. If Bush does this, what recourse does Congress have to override the presidential veto?

Article I Section 7: "If after such reconsideration, two thirds of that house shall agree to pass the bill, it shall be sent, together with the objections, to the other house, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two-thirds of that house, it shall become a law. "

So, 2/3 majority of both House and Senate.

But Congress can get what it wants by simply having the courage to stick to their guns. As long as they attach the provision to every military appropriations bill, Bush only gets his money to continue fighting if he agrees to the conditions imposed by Congress.

Congress controls the purse strings. That's the check and balance set up in the Constitution. All Congress has to do is stay the course.

If they could get a 2/3 majority in both houses they could override the President. There would be an outside chance of getting that in the house, but not in the Senate. Otherwise, I think the only other thing they could do would be to stand up to the President and say that Iraq is no longer going to be a money hole in which Bush can bulldoze money by the trillions into anymore.

A veto override requires a recorded two-thirds vote of those voting in each house.

The need a 2/3 majority to override a veto....with the slim majority margin the Dems have...NOT A CHANCE TO OVERRIDE....as I said after the election...the best thing after the Dem's won...is it will b e that NOTHING will get done...they wont pass GW's requests...and GW will veto any Libbie anti US programs.

A 60% vote of both Houses of Congress and that won't happen.
