What Jenny said is true However, I find that the communicative approach works best. Talk to them in the language as much as possible, and get them speaking right away. You can also do written activities, but I would focus more on the spoken. Tests should focus on the meanings of the words. Look for ways to ensure comprehension. Generally, fill-in-the-blank exercises are not good ways to measure comprehension. Good luck.

There are different methodologies for teaching a foreign language; there's the Audio-Lingual Method, Communicative Language Teaching, Communicate Language Learning, Desuggestopedia, Total Physical Response, etc. The method chosen will greatly depend on the philosophy the teacher has of how a language is acquired; for example, if the teacher believes listening and speaking are more important than reading or writing he might lean towards the Audio-lingual Method.
