I'm not quite sure why people are attributing love and obsession, to people, or relationships only. Love is real. Obsession is fantasy.

I love my dogs because they're sweet and smart and loyal and they make me feel great. I love ice cream because it's smooth and creamy and cold and it makes me feel great. I have the companionship of my dogs any time I want it, and I can easily get ice cream.

I'm obsessed with the thought of living at the beach because it's an escape from my daily life and it makes me feel great. I'm obsessed with the talents of Richie Sambora, because his voice and his fingers on a guitar make me feel great. And it's likely, that's as far as either of these will ever go.

Obsession becomes pathological if it becomes chronic w. associated compulsive desires and behavior. There is an initial obsessive stage to falling in love, if un-reciprocated this it becomes known as infatuation (literally foolish love), if reciprocated it becomes a dance and/or battle of wills and souls coping and dealing w. life together through compromise.
Obsessive and or compulsive behavior usually climbs along a continuum of disorder, (and can become hate just as easily), love starts w. a biochemical spark (usually, in the West anyway), rather than a delusion; waxes and wanes, grows or dissolves, becoming an individual unwritten treaty between two people that means what they choose it to mean to them.

The first thing that comes to mind is selfishness. Obsession is much more, if not completely, focused with self. Love is more concerned with the well-being of the other.

Love is not having to worry about the competition; obsession is driving non-stop half way across the country in diapers to take out the competition!

Well, I'm in love with my wife, but I'm obsessed with this Y!A stuff.

I'm not in love with Y!A; yet if all the time I've spent pushing the buttons on this keyboard had been spent pushing my wife's buttons, she wouldn't have liked it at all.

Yeah, that's the difference! All clear now?

love is about wanting to share your feelings and happiness with someone else. obsession has less regard for the other person's feelings and is more focused on what you want. obsession also seems to be focused on an ideal of what you want someone to be, whereas love is accepting of someone as they really are.

love has nothing to do with having a crush on someone or always wanting to be with that person. there is only one type of love... thats the love for your family.

when youre dating someone, you do love them but you also have traits of obsession. you do want to be with them and you do have a crush on them. but when you get older with the person, i dont think you really have a crush on them, and you dont care to spend every waking moment with them. all you have left is love for that person, and thats what keeps couples together forever... is their love for each other.

maybe people who get divorced only had an obsession with the person but mistakened it for love. and when the obsession went away, they had nothing else to give and severed ties with their significant other. they thought it was love but really it was the obsession.
