In short: a hunger for attention and aversion to discipline.
The Hollywood liberals and a sizable portion of democrats fall into the first category. Has anyone ever seen Jesse Jackson actually do something unless there was a camera or microphone around? Oddly enough, a lot of people from all walks of life (left and right) are addicted to attention. This is especially true with politicians and the "Hollywood Crowd". And although there are a few conservatives who are also addicted to attention, the very nature of conservatism--that each person should take care of himself and stand on his own--rejects the kind of attitudes that would have them seeking out cameras and microphones to whine about what someone else is doing. Some do, but most don't.
Self-discipline is a conservative ideal and is also at the root of military service. That is why such a high percentage of the military is conservative.
Modern liberalism by its nature is pacifistic. They don't want anyone interfering with their rights. Of course, they feel perfectly entitled to interfere with yours. They want to tell you where you must send your children to school. They want to tell you that you can or cannot own a firearm. They want to tell you where you can and cannot pray. They want to tell you what doctor you can and cannot see. They want to tell you what kind of vehicle to drive. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.
You are right, though. Even though the poll you cite is a few years old, it still depicts the actual trend, in spite of what others may claim.
The reason, as stated earlier, is that discipline and self-reliance are hallmarks of both the military and the conservative movement. There may be a number of younger and new recruits who grew up as liberals and have not shed that attitude. But give them about six years in the military and that may change. Nothing will turn a liberal into a conservative faster than another liberal.
The answer to your question though is that the reason so many liberals do not fight for their rights is because so few of them can stomach the military. It is a life that is contrary to the concept of entitlement on which modern liberalism is based.
This is not intended to be a derogatory jab at liberals but a simple, analytical explanation of why liberals make up a minority in the military forces. We have an all volunteer military. No one is forced to serve who does not wish to. And the vast majority of liberals do not wish to live under the discipline of military life.

Let's see, Dick Cheney, "Scooter" Libby, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and Karl Rove never served in the military. Bush got a plum National Guard assignment and avoided combat. Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill Bennet, and Jerry Falwell never served. Shall I go on? OK. Newt Gingrich never saw the inside of a military uniform. Nor did Jeb Bush, George Allen, Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, or John Ashcroft.

On the other hand, John Kerry served. So did Jimmy Carter, Michael Dukakis, Walter Mondale, and Lloyd Bentsen.

Since "liberal" is not actually defined, the statistics are meaningless. And note that between 15% and 30% vote Democrat -- which means that probably a lot more than 7% support at least some liberal ideas.

As far as fighting for their rights, the US has no military enemy that is trying to take away our rights. The only group currently trying to take away our rights is the US government.

I do.

First, this poll is 4 years old!

Second, you need to keep in mind that when a lot of these polls are done, we are told what to put and we have a high ranking individual over our shoulder! Those people who put liberal were taking a risk at getting in trouble. The president doesn't want to see that his military isn't behind him! How do you think the polls looked when Clinton was in office??

After the crap proved itself out in Korea and Vietnam many people felt that governments make the decision to go to war and if it is something you don't believe in too bad --you go.

So if you don't join you don't have to worry about fighting bogus crap that you don't believe in.

Let the leaders duel it out!!

Kind of the situation in which that Watada guy joined to fight in Afghanistan to help bring Al Qaeda to justice and then when he was sent to Iraq he didn't want to go there because he had personal reservations about our invasion there!

Because they do not understand the nature of the real enemy. Liberal has a meaning, and it is understood by most of us to be left of center (wherever that is).

rights are afforded to all citizens not just those serving in the military....... and the reason why liberals care about their rights is because this is America!!!!

using your logic...... only Americans who fight for their supposed freedom should have rights........ perhaps you don't belong in America...... because your way of thinking certainly isn't American, freedom, and part of our constitution!!!!!

We don't fight for our rights by invading other countries. We don't fight for our rights by torturing others, by flushing the Constitution down the toilet, by flying the flag in other people's faces, and decorating our cars with all sorts of little ribbons.

We fight for our rights by standing up to the corruption here at home. We fight for our rights by voting for the candidates who best represent the ideals of the United States of America.

I fight when my rights are infringed on. I hope this question isn't referring to the war in Iraq, which has nothing to do with any of our rights being treatened.
