Arm strength is important, but what some beginners don't realize is that a lot of tennis also comes from your legs and hips. So make sure you are using your lower body to help hit the shot.

A good drill I know of is to use an old racquet (or a new one you'll be restringing soon, I guess), and hit it against a fence repeatedly. Start with the racquet low, and make sure it hits flat against the fence. This will help you direct your shots into a court, rather than flying out into oblivion or into the net. Once you're hitting without the fence, your follow-through should be toward or over your opposite shoulder. The shoulder movement should come pretty naturally.

Once you are able to hit a basic flat shot into the court, find someone to practice with. Either go for rallies or have them serve you slow, easy balls to hit back. Make your goal to hit the ball in the center of the court, between the service line and the end line. Start experimenting with cross-court and down-the-line shots. Once you can maintain a rally and hit consistent shots, you'll be comfortable adding more power and spin. Practice makes perfect - good luck!

If you're right-handed, step into the ball with your left foot. When you swing, follow through from shoulder to shoulder and keep your racket flat.

Well, first of all you want to use a tennis racket. Trying it with a golf club or croquet mallet is gonna be difficult.
