my daughter started about about 8 months. Every child is different though. My son started at about 5 months but that is because I was propping his bottle more ( I was alot younger then). With my daughter it was later because I took the time out of my day to hold her for her feedings it was a special time for us. She didn't start holding her bottle until I started giving her a sippy cup with a little bit of juice in it. When I have not spent enough cuddle time with my daughter she still will refuse to hold her bottle if she wants to cuddle with me and have me hold it for her.

Well, my baby is 8 months and began holding her bottle in fun at 7 months. She can hold a sippy cup, feeds herself with her fingers, and, very occassionally, a spoon, and picks up tiny things, so I think she's capable. However, when she's seriously feeding, I think she likes to let mommy do the work while she passes out to a nice warm breastmilk cocktail. :-)
Babies develop on their own timeline. My daughter has been way ahead on some aspects (mostly physical/emotional) and way behind on others (language).

Wow -- this is going back at least 13 years for me, but I THINK my youngest was around 5 or 6 months before he started holding his own bottle. I don't know if he could do it before then, though, because I was breastfeeding him until he turned 5 months. They have to get to the point where they can conscientiously control their hand muscles to do it.

My baby COULD hold it at about 7 months, BUT he would not drink when I let him hold it, he just wanted to play with it. So a didn't let him hold it very much. Now at 10 months I let him hold his own sippy for his afternoon snack, because he's very hungry and highly motivated to drink, not play. He's getting there :)
