For the first few months, because the army was making sure that Saddam didn't in fact have any WMDs stashed away. So, the "Mission Accomplished" actually took a few more months to tie up the lose ends after deposing Saddam

After those few extra months, we started an entirely different mission. The goal was no longer to depose Saddam and stop him from developing or using WMDs.

The new goal is to remain in Iraq until there is no more sectarian violence. Which is going to take centuries, because the conflict has been going on for centurires.

Because it was all a farce. I supported the war in the first place but when I saw Bush wearing those clothes and smiling while in the background the banner read: Mission Accomplished that is when I knew that the war wasn't over. It had all been a mistake and I regret that I've ever supported it if only for a couple of months. I believed our president that Iraq had WMDs and connections to Al-Quaida. I thought we would capture Saddam and get out of there while finding the WMDs. I was wrong and know I'm very much against the war and I know we didn't had a good motive to go there.

The troops didn't come home after "Mission Accomplished" because the "mission"-if there is one- was never accomplished. The sign was just an attempt to keep up support for the war in the U.S.- and, let's face it, it worked for a while.

Actually, Kelly, many did.

However, the situation deteriorated and we had to come back to stabilize the government.

We do a good job at the warfight thing. It's the occupation thing that we weren't very efficient at doing. Now, we're having to re-win hearts and minds as well as fight the insurgents, terrorists, and militia.

let's hear the right-wingers spin his one.

"we did accomplish the mission. we got rid of that bad man" etc. etc. etc.

even karl rove admits that the "mission accomplished" fiasco was ill-advised. it just helps america continue to look incredibly self-righteous, cocky and DUMB. and made us here at home significantly less safe.
