Allow me, as a scientist who has conducted experiments as to the effectiveness of giving gerbils radioactive kool-aide showers, to provide the academic answer for this one.
Whereas men tend to be attracted to women 1st and foremost by their looks, women tend to look at other factors when pursing a long term relationship. Women are attracted to wealth, status, and power. This is why you often see craggly old men with hot young women but rarely see decrepit old ladies with hot young studs.
If a man is unavailable (and especially if the woman who has snared him is attractive) this is a sign that he must have some pretty decent resources in order to have gotten her. In essence, the woman acts as a status symbol for the man--thus the term 'trophy wife'.

It is true. Think of clergy...the more fobidden the fruit, the sweeter the pie.
Of course men, like women, sometimes play hard to get. This usually rewards them with more solitude than they can stand.

Trashy or oversexed women that want sex and not commitment always go for men who are unavailable or married. Men have a way of being dominant and possessive, and that's less likely to happen if he's already committed.

It makes them irresistible to women with attachment problems, or women who had a distant/unavailable father. Either way, I suspect women who would be attracted to that aren't ready for a healthy relationship yet.

There's definitely some truth in that and I think it goes both ways for men too. I guess we are all attracted by a challenge.

It's true for me. If my husband is busy or tired and he seems kind of not into it I tend to want it even more! It drives me crazy! I know he sometimes does it on purpose because he likes for me to be really aggressive with him ;o)

I concur with Lauran - I dated the hottest guy in high school (back in the day) and, of course, he turned out to be gay.
No it wasn't my fault! Hmph.

playing hard to get works much better for women, it's true. but it still can work. it's human nature to want what you don't have...
