It could be a worn clutch, or one that needs adjusting, especially if things are better driving along. A mechanic could tell easily. Otherwise the mechanism between stick and gears may need adjusting. Only replacement of the clutch of these possibilities involves significant cost.

from your description it appears that the clutch is not clearing properly this could be due to too much free play or the clutch assembly breaking up. does clutch pedal go almost to the floor before resistance is felt? does the drive take up as soon as you start to engage the clutch? does the clutch snatch or grab? these questions need answering before deciding if clutch is us or excess free play.

It does sound like the clutch is going? is there a funny smell at all times? if there is go get it checked out asap the longer you leave it my little funky monkey the worse it will get.

It sounds like your clutch is gorn, which will lead to it dragging and making gearchanging difficult. However, it might just be adjustment, if there is any.
