We pay more for things -- drug companies have huge profit margins. (And look at those who use most meds, those on Medicare. The current structure makes them pay MUCH more than they should have to, what with none of the cost-controls in place, such as bulk buying -- thanks, again, Dubya.)
Also, I bet that statistic includes cosmetic surgery -- which hurts, rather than helps, health.
There are a LOT of people who can only get any health care by waiting until they have to go to the emergency room for attention.
That's expensive, as well as being bad public health policy.
These are my guesses.
It's a completely irrational "system" that hurts rather than helps us.

It's a sorry situation and needs to be completely gutted and revamped. We simply aren't getting the results we deserve for all of the money spent.
To the guy a few posts above, hello, Hillary's healthcare plan was shot down by the Repub congress and never enacted?
