The most cost effective way is to ensure that the website for your online retail business ranks well in the search engines for the terms that your customers may search for.
To do this you will have to optimize your website and the process is called search engine optimization or SEO.
You can follow this tutorial to learn all about it http://www.seo-blog.com/tutorial.php

Use print media, give your website address and advertise one only item to create want (at least 1/8 page 1/4 is best).
The best print media is one that targets a particular demographic group that would be favorable to your product. The second best way to advertise is in classified ads

I would like to introduce you to a new program that can create a flow of new customers and new sales for your business. And there is NO COST TO YOU if we don't deliver results.
NOC works directly with merchants all over the world to create exciting and exclusive offers for consumers. NOC makes it easy for consumers everywhere to find great money-saving deals on specific products and services they are looking for, while also providing a fun and exciting way to discover new and different products, services, businesses, restaurants, and more.
I believe that your business could benefit greatly from participating in the program. Here is how easy it is to get started:
(1) Register free as a NOC merchant.
(2) Set up as many coupons as you want...free.
(3) NOC affiliates, like myself, will begin promoting your coupons (again, at no cost to you).
(4) Each time a coupon is redeemed, you agree to pay NOC a "bounty". Please note that YOU decide how much the bounty will be, and payment of bounties is only required once per month.
In short, we will help you create sales for your business. If we don't, you pay nothing. Compare that to traditional advertising such as newspapers or radio where you pay upfront and HOPE it pays off. With NOC, results are GUARANTEED. We deliver the results you want...at the terms YOU set, or you pay nothing. What could be more fair?

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

I think paid search is another good way to drive traffic to your site. Paid search is the sponsored ads on a search engine results page (SERP) that show along the top and right side. Yahoo, Google, and MSN have programs. Google AdWords is the most popular. With paid search, or pay-per-click (PPC), you allocate a dollar amount per day you're willing to spend and you bid on keywords. Compelling, relevant ads, good keyword choice and related landing pages can help you take advantage of whatever money you're willing to spend. My small business marketing blog (www.lonelymarketer.com) covers paid search, but there are tons of other resources available for education on how it works.

One idea is to make sure that your web address appears below your name in each e-mail that you send. You could create an e-mail signature so that you don't forget. For example:
Best wishes,
your name
your business name
your business web address

Once you get your site up you need to build inbound links.
Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:
http://www.avivadirectory.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=kahmer
http://www.kahmer.com
http://www.joeant.com
The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank
with Yahoo / Google / MSN.
Also work on your meta tags. Here is an
article on how they work: http://www.richkahmer.com/meta-tags.html

Use affiliates and they pay YOU. Go to the bottom of most websites and you will find a link to affiliates.
