There are many gases which can make you unconscious, such as excessive amounts of carbon monoxide in the air, which makes a person become unconscious. Gases normally does not make people become unconscious unless if it comes in excessive amounts, and is harmful to the immune system.

Nitrous Oxide (N2O) or laughing gas. It actually chokes your breath and when you try to recover yourself, you have to laugh. People sometimes are unconscious after inhaling this gas.
Chloroform as said is the first anaesthetic.
Carbon monoxide (CO) stops further letting of oxygen in the haemoglobin by reacting with it. The ultimate result is death.
Phencyclidine (PCP), Ketamine (C13 H16 Cl NO) and Dextromethophan (C18 H25 NO) are also harmful in inhaling. They cause unconsciousness and further side effects.

There are many gases which can make humans unconscious. Some have been developed deliberately - the first inhalational anesthetic was ether, but there are many others, including Nitrous Oxide, Halothane and Isoflurane, that are commonly used in surgery today.
