Arthur Miller, author of the Crucible, said that he was more afraid of the current world than he was in the 50s (?) when we were threatened by nuclear bombs and stuff.

Which is saying a lot.

He wrote the Crucible when they were having a communist "witch hunt" in the United States.

The economy is a lot harsher, in the US anyway. Hard work and education doesn't get you by like it should, you have to know people if you want to not struggle to make ends meet. It's more and more impossible to be able to have one parent work and the other stay home. Our kids do not get the real things they need, somebody who's only job is to care for them. I recently got laid off and can't tell you how much of a wonderful thing this is for my family. Unfortunately, I have to go back to work, but I would love to just be their mom.

I actually have never heard that saying.

I have heard this though:

"The more things change, the more things stay the same"

That, I believe is true.
However to answer you "hard" is all relative. Harder in terms of diseases and such, yes it was most likely harder for my parents generation, before many of the vaccines we have we invented.

Harder in terms of preventing the total loss of freedom in America, its harder for the current generatiom than it was for the previous one.

I don't think they necessarily get harder, they just get different. Every generation has new things to deal with than the generation before. We learn how to take care of one thign adn another takes its place.

I think that phrase stopped with the baby boomer generation. I don't think the generation X kids could have it any easier....

I think it is cyclical. The youth of today will have a hard time into their twenties, but if they survive that, life will be bountiful.
Their children will have a peaceful youth, with trouble coming later.

If they are talking about how quickly things change, then the answer is yet.

Working in computers, it is stressful how quickly technology changes, and the difficulty of keeping up.

i always thought it was harder "back in the day", because certain issues werent addressed (ex. diseases,technology);
but at the same time, we have new issues and challenges in our comtemporary age
