I am designing my first magazine by myself and am not sure of all the pre-press standards. Please pass along any links/resources that are good for this.

You need to ask the printer what the preferred format is for the system. Usually with printed materials (as opposed to internet materials) the higher the resolution the better the result. If the printing system can handle 800dpi then images should be just a little above that resolution. Anything way above that is just wasted. Tiff may or may not be the desired format. Many jpg for photos may work just as well just dont over compress them. Alot also depends on the program both you and the printer use to lay out the pages.
