The trick of course is finding that benevolent dictator. And what does benevolent even mean? Benevolent towards whom and in what way? I think right now many in the military business, oil business, and top tier of wealth, might consider our current almost-dictator to be very benevolent... towards them.

Even if you could find such a person, his policies most likely would help some to the expense of others.

Very different. Democracy is a lot of work-one that is always in progress. That is one of the reasons why we are know as such an industrious people and are so economically powerful. The marketplace of ideas is given free reign in our system which has led to remarkable advances for the world in nearly every aspect of human life. Dictatorships survive mostly by supporting the status quo. No surprises-fewer problems. Total control leads to apathy and ideological destruction such as the Soviet Union. Creativity and free thought are suppressed so any progressive speech or action is viewed as a threat to the existence of the state. In our society, in most cases, it is celebrated. Controversy is part of the package as is our politically adversarial system. Both are necessary for a healthy discourse that hopefully lead to wise and thoughtful programs and decisions. We stub our toes occasionally but actually do a pretty good job after all the smoke clears.

There is no such thing as a benevolent dictator. ALL government is tyranny... I will concede that it is a necissary evil, but should be questioned and the people should carry a profound mistrust right on their sleeves.

Life in America is what it is, because there are two competing visions of america.

There is no such animal.

Dictators may fancy themselves as benevolent, but in order to be a dictator you have to crush some people or ideologies along the way.

No, because it is. The Democrats and Republicans are all one Aristocracy. They intermarry, thier kids go to the same schools. They laugh at the fanatics who insist there is a difference.

Compared to now with a malevolent dictator?

yes it would be quite different. I'm sure many freedoms we now enjoy would be taken away post haste. Probably the first thing to go would be the free press.
