Emo means emotional. It is a form of music yes you're right and it is also commonly used as a stereotype to people simple because of things like their hair, their clothes, their accessories, the music they listen to. etc. It can be a sub-"genre" of "Goth". I can explain this term from a personal point of view because I get called this, even though I do not find it offensive at all. A list of ""emo"" bands are:
Hawthorne Heights, Taking Back Sunday etc.

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.
