Ok for all the people answring this question wit hgout fish experince you all wrong some answers are funny e.g. take the whoel tank to bits and clean it, what has that got to do with the pump going into the filter i think these people really do need to cheack ehat they are saying you cannot just "emptie" a tank liek that it would roiune the cycles people just want some points really you should try leaving the pump off for an hour to cool and just to settle due to it has been on for weeks/months and could over heat and just give it a quick clean!

Have you cleaned it lately???

Take it apart and make sure there is nothing stuck in it. Any kind of pump or filter motor should be cleaned out at least once a month. You would be amazed at the amount of goo that can grow in one rather quickly.

Make sure there is nothing clogging up one ot the tubes and that nothing is caught around the impeller in the pump. Those are the most common causes of a pump working too hard.

Turn the power off to your tank, remove the pump and clean the filter in cold water.then put the filter back in the pump and turn the power back on

This happened with our pump. Have you taken it apart and cleaned it out? If you have tried that then maybe think about replacing the filter and if you have a problem with small snails they could be clogging it up!

if it is an air filter with clear tubes it sounds like the motor inside is failing
However if it is a black box filter with sponge insert it will need cleaning and/or turning the sponge the other way up in the filter

your filters probably need to be cleaned or changed completely, or there may be something stuck in the pump...your fish tank may need to be emptied and cleaned completely...
